AI won’t take our jobs, but it will definitely change them.
We have all been exposed to Artificial Intelligence (AI), from chatbots to eerily realistic images. I remember watching a video of some bunnies jumping on trampolines and, at first glance, I didn’t think much of it. Until I was hit with the familiar realisation – it was AI. Moments like this remind me of how convincingly artificial intelligence can mimic real life.
The capabilities of this technological advancement can feel threatening to those of us in the communications field. But the truth is, AI isn’t replacing our jobs but rather reshaping how we work. I came to this conclusion after attending a panel at Events Uncovered, “Will AI Take my job? Busting Myths and Embracing the AI Revolution.” As someone who is often skeptical of AI, I found it refreshing to hear from perspectives that framed AI as a tool to collaborate with. One panelist pointed out that throughout history, technologies have developed and changed the nature of work, but we have always been able to adapt to this, just as we can with AI.
That said, I believe we need to be more thoughtful about how we use AI. The impact it has on the environment is not to be dismissed. In fact, the energy Chat GPT uses to generate a single response is equivalent to ten Google searches.
My opinion of AI is still evolving, and that’s ok! Resistance to change is natural. But as communicators, our role isn’t going anywhere. When used wisely, AI can be a helpful tool that saves time across multiple workspaces. At LKB, we could use AI to structure our days, automate routine tasks, and enhance data analysis and insights. However, the need to bring people together, craft meaningful stories and drive human connection, cannot be replicated by AI.
