The benefits of growing your career while you study

Last year I began working part time at LKB as Executive Assistant and Project Support, simply taking an opportunity to take on some more work in addition to my casual customer service job, while studying full time. Fast forward to today, I am celebrating my first work anniversary, have recently been promoted I am surrounded by an amazing team and I have a newfound passion and interest in an industry I never considered as a career option.

As a fifth-year university student, studying a Bachelor of Law and Arts, it seems the obvious pathway would be pursuing a career in law. However, I have never been able to picture myself as a lawyer or in that field. So why have I continued with this degree, and what use will it be to me? Over the last year at LKB I have seen how instrumental the skills I have acquired while studying law have been in helping me grow and develop as a member of the team. Writing, researching and problem solving are all skills that I have learnt, enhanced and excelled in throughout my degree.

Working at LKB and immersing myself in a different industry and field to what I am studying at university, has been a unique opportunity to see how valuable my law degree will be to me, no matter what career path I decide to follow. Though often difficult and challenging, and always with a heavy workload, my law degree has introduced me to new and abstract ways of thinking, as well as invaluable skills and a strong work ethic.

Throughout the last year at LKB, I have had the pleasure of working under and being managed by an array of talented communication experts. Even though I only work part time, each member of the team has been unwavering in their support and guidance. By setting goals and being assigned a range of different tasks, I have been able to adapt the skills I have gained from my law degree and apply it to client research, administrative tasks, marketing and social media development.

Now, in my new position as Junior Consultant, I can take on a new range of responsibilities and continue developing and growing as a communication professional, utilising the skills and work ethic I have attained while studying law. I now look forward to my final years of study, and eventually graduating with a degree I know will assist me in thriving in whatever industry or career I choose to work in.
