Face to face conversations – the most underrated tool in the energy transition

The past month has highlighted something important about the energy transition in NSW.

We’re seeing the fast-tracking of energy projects, short-term fuel security concerns and opposing political voices in the public arena.

As the pace of renewable energy projects accelerates across NSW, social licence will increasingly determine whether projects can meet the current tight delivery deadlines.

And I’m also seeing more pressure coming from decision makers and approval bodies, for proponents to demonstrate they have genuinely engaged with communities.

In the energy world, we often talk about gigawatts, transmission lines and investment pipelines. But increasingly, the real challenge isn’t all technical, it’s human.

From what I’ve seen, regional communities understand change and many have already been hosting the state’s infrastructure for generations. But they expect respect, transparency and early communications from those delivering it.

Projects that engage early give themselves the time to meet face-to-face, listen thoughtfully and use that feedback in the planning process. Explaining complicated technology in plain-English matters. So does allowing space for questions, sharing perspectives and understanding emotions. Complex infrastructure projects may always raise questions and concerns but communities still rely on in person connection to build legitimacy. The future isn’t purely digital, it’s a thoughtful blend of digital scale with human depth.

In my view, the lesson is simple.

The energy transition won’t be built only with batteries, solar panels and transmission lines. It will be built through conversations.

Because ultimately, social licence isn’t built through consultation documents, it’s built through trust.
