Why junior team members are critical in helping deliver big projects

Large communication and engagement projects are often associated with senior leadership, complex strategies and high level decision making. But behind every successful project is a broader team, and junior team members play a critical role in making those projects a success.

My contribution doesn’t usually involve writing strategies or leading event delivery. Instead, it sits in the detail. The research, coordination and day to day communication that helps turn ideas into outcomes.

In my role, I am typically responsible for gathering background information, researching key concepts, reviewing documents, and understanding stakeholder landscapes. This work helps ensure the wider team is informed and aligned throughout the project. Good research also allows the project manager to focus their time on interpretation and strategy, knowing the foundations are solid.

From venues and catering to equipment and AV, I often liaise directly with suppliers to confirm timelines, requirements and budgets. This coordination helps projects run smoothly and ensures that all activities are delivered to a high standard. It also builds an understanding of how many moving parts sit behind a single workshop or event.

I also frequently support communication with clients. This includes sharing updates and meeting minutes, confirming logistics, and responding to day to day queries. While this might seem routine, these interactions are critical to maintaining trust and momentum. They also help emerging professionals, such as myself, develop confidence, professionalism and an understanding of client expectations.

Whether it’s supporting event delivery, taking notes or managing suppliers, junior team members play a hands on role throughout project delivery. Being in this position provides a valuable perspective on what meaningful engagement looks like in practice.

While my role may be smaller, it is far from secondary. Big projects rely on strong foundations, clear communication and careful coordination, all areas where junior team members make a difference. Over time, these experiences build the skills and understanding required to grow into a more senior role.
